Food waste, waste from gutting fish, hunting waste and litter left behind in the mountains attract red foxes, so we can all help to prevent this. Felles Fjellrev is today launching a campaign to remind those visiting the mountains to collect all their waste and take it away with them.
One effect of climate change is the fact that the red fox is spreading above the tree line, where it does not normally live. This, along with higher levels of human activity in the mountains, has served to significantly widen the range of the red fox. Litter and/or food scraps and game waste left in the mountains attract red foxes.
The red fox is almost twice the size of the Arctic fox and poses a threat in several ways – both as a competitor for food and because red foxes actually kill Arctic foxes.
The campaign is a joint initiative by Norway, Sweden and Finland that hopes to encourage more people to help the Arctic fox – a species common to all three countries – by taking care to minimise the risks of the red fox encroaching on the Arctic fox’s habitat.
